zea mays – Annual – Height 1.5 m x 25 cm

Ready to pick when silks have withered.

Space 25 cm apart in a block, not a row (makes for better pollination). Plant in rich moist soil in full sun.

Grow lettuces among the corn to give them shade.

Corn is a heavy feeder, so add manure or compost. Keep free of weeds until knee-high, and then leave it alone.

Harvest when the silks at the end of an ear are a dry brown, the cob seems to start to droop, and the kernels release milky juice when cut
